Tic‑Tac‑Toe (also known as Noughts and Crosses) is a two-player game played on a 3×3 grid. One player is X, the other is O. You take turns placing your mark in an empty square, and the first player to line up three of their marks — across, down or diagonally — wins. If all nine squares fill up with no line, the round is a draw.

It is one of the best-known pencil-and-paper games in the world and a perfect first lesson in strategy. With best play from both sides it always ends in a draw, so the real fun is in spotting your opponent’s mistakes — and avoiding your own.

How to play

  1. Player X goes first — tap or click any empty square.
  2. Players alternate turns. The status badge shows whose move it is.
  3. Get three marks in a row to win, or fill the board for a draw.
  4. Press New round to play again. Scores are tallied for you.
Pro tip: take the centre or a corner first, and always check whether your opponent is one move away from winning.

Who can play it?

Anyone. If you can tell an X from an O, you already know enough to start.
